W. S. Measday Earns Ph.D. Degree At MIT

Walter Sparks Measday, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Measday of 24 Clairmont Avenue, Westwood, will be awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy on June 10 by Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Mr. Measday was educated in the primary and secondary schools of Westwood, being graduated from Westwood High School in 1937. He received an A.B. from William and Mary College in 1941. After one year in the Graduate School of Duke University, he entered military service in 1942 and served for four years as a radar specialist in the U.S. Air Force, including 1½ years in the Pacific Theatre.

He was discharged from active service as a staff sergeant in 1946 and entered the Graduate School of M.I.T. that Fall, remaining in residence until 1950. During this period he was a graduate assistant in economics. From 1950 to 1955 he was an instructor in economics at the University of Maryland. Recently he was promoted to assistant professor. He has taught in the Summer schools of the University of Maryland and the College of William and Mary and has given courses at the Pentagon, to Air Force personnel at Andrews and Bolling Fields and to Navy personnel at Bethesda Naval Hospital.

He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Theta Chi Delta (honorary chemistry fraternity), American Economic Association and the Econometric Society.

He is married to the former Jeannette Louise Ivey of Baltimore, Md. They live in College Park, Maryland, with their three children: Walter IV, Peter and Andrew.
