Jane Cowperthwait Read
October 14, 1919 ~ April 21, 2006 (age 86)
Jane Cowperthwait Read, 86, of Frederick, passed away Friday, April 21 at Carroll Hospital Center. She was the loving wife of the late Chaplain (Colonel) Charles E. Read, US Army (Ret).
Born October 14, 1919 in Waterbury, Connecticut, she was the daughter of the late George Ely, Jr. and Aileen Fernand Cowperthwait.
Mrs. Read at one time held the highest Girl Scout rank, Golden Eagle. She attended Western Maryland College where she met and married her husband and later would encourage all her children to attend. As a military wife, she and the family resided in Okinawa, Germany and many bases here in the United States. As a devoted minister's wife, she was engrossed in church and missions work throughout her life. She also enjoyed her garden, nature and was considered by all who knew her, a concerned friend and good listener.
Mrs. Read was the beloved mother of daughter, Patricia Read Barnhart and husband Kenneth of Westminster; three sons, Bruce Hammond Read and wife Vicki of Tucson, AZ, David Shipley Read and wife Barbara of Las Cruces, NM and Gordon Wesley Read of Steamboat Springs, CO; six grandchildren, Scott Barnhart, Tamara Read, Karen Meger, Amber Read-Zamilpa, Crystal Wohle and Douglas Read; six great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Betty Adams of Fairfield, Connecticut.
A memorial service will be at Brook Hill United Methodist Church, 8946 Indian Springs Rd, Frederick, MD on Monday, April 24 at 7 PM. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery on Wednesday, May 24 at 10 AM.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Strawbridge Shrine Association or the Reverend Charles E. Read Scholarship Fund, both c/o Brook Hill United Methodist Church, 8946 Indian Springs Rd., Frederick, MD 21702.
